DRUM NIGHT Friday April 11th, 2008 - 8 PM Help us celebrate our FIFTH annual DRUM NIGHT! This year, we are pleased to announce two very special guests from Toronto: World-renowned South Indian mrdangam player TRICHY SANKARAN, and his daughter, autorickshaw vocalist SUBA SANKARAN. The evening will be hosted by KEN SHORLEY, who will also perform a short opening set. Join us at Drum Night, and set the groove for spring! Trichy Sankaran (mrdangam, kanjira) Trichy Sankaran is a world-renowned percussion virtuoso, Indian music scholar and composer. He has performed at major festivals in India, South-East Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. In addition to his usual traditional settings, he has performed with gamelan, jazz, electronic, African music ensembles, and World Drums. While representing his famous guru Sri Palani Subramania Pillai’s style, Vidwan Sankaran has given new dimensions to the art of mrdangam, thus making his style traditional yet innovative. Professor Sankaran is the Founding Director of Indian Music Studies and Professor of Music at York University in Toronto, Canada, where he has been teaching since 1971. His numerous recordings include Laya Vinyas (1990) – solo performances on mrdangam and kanjira; Sunada (1993) – classical Karnatak repertoire, with K. Subramaniam (vina); and Lotus Signatures (1997) – classical Karnatak repertoire, with Dr. N. Ramani (flute). Ken Shorley (hand drums, percussion) Ken is a percussionist and composer who specializes in hand drumming from India and the Middle East.
